Want a firm flat
stomach? Exercise those abdominal muscles – it will benefit the
whole body
Many people cringe at even the
thought of exercising their abdominal muscles – endless sit-ups,
crunches and side-bends becomes a lesson in overcoming monotony.
However, most people claim they want the flat, defined stomach
which comes from exercising these muscles regularly. Exercising
the abdominal muscles has other benefits besides merely the
improved profile – they provide support to the spine and lower
back which improves your overall body strength and flexibility.
Women often experience a
separation of the abdominal muscles during pregnancy and need to
begin exercises as soon as possible afterwards to develop the
strength and tautness they had before. Some people experience the
same type of spread from breathing incorrectly – developing
“middle aged spread” even though they might not be overweight.
Needless to say, some focused exercises in this area are worth the
effort. A few repetitions at a time, several times a day will help
build up these muscles which may tire quickly when you first begin
an exercise regime.
Besides all the exercises you can
do lying on the floor, there is a range of special equipment that
you can use to support your body while you exercise your abdominal
muscles. An exercise ball can be useful to help with a range of
motion exercises and allow the minute position adjustments to
really put your muscles through their paces. Most of the
specialized equipment which helps isolate and exercise the rectus
abdominis and the oblique muscles permit you to adjust the level
of resistance to enhance your work out. For those looking to
expend a bit more effort, equipment which enables you to do
vertical knee lifts will provide that additional challenge.
Whatever your choice, make sure you make time to do it regularly.
