Choosing a
realistic water rower
In athletic circles, it is said that rowers are among the
fittest athletes around, since rowing exercises involvej more
muscle groups than any other sport. If you think about it, this
is logical, but the expense of rowing means that it is also
something that not everyone can enjoy. Land based water rower
machines have the same reputation – as being somewhat expensive
pieces of gym equipment. But the price of the average water
rower has come down over the years so that now, everyone should
be able to benefit from this highly active and rewarding sport.
There are, however, a few caveats to consider when shopping
around for a water rower, and the first is that the action is
not always the same. There are generally two types of rowing
machine, one substantially cheaper than the other, and it is
important not to confuse them.
The first kind of machine, which is not strictly a water rower
at all, provides two oar substitutes which are brought towards
the chest, whilst the body moves up and down on a sliding seat.
It is an action that everyone associates with rowing, but which
does not translate very well to land based machines. The result
is that, while the tensioning system is cheap to implement, it
is not a good substitute for the real thing.
What is, is the second kind of water rower, which comprises a
big fan at one end, and a bar with a chain connected to it,
which is used to pull against the rotation of the fan, and this
simulates the action of rowing through water. The big bonus is
that you do not need any additional tensioning system – the
harder you row, the harder it becomes to row, just like rowing
against real water.
