Gym floor exercises for a new health regime

Covering the gym floor is a necessity when expecting people to use it to perform exercises on an otherwise hard surface.

At the heavy duty end of the scale, the Pilates mat provides a thick gym floor covering, particularly suitable for practitioners of this relaxing exercise regime, because it provides an extra bit of padding. This is necessary because the Pilates exercises require that the weight of the entire body is sometimes supported for some length of time on a single joint, which can become very uncomfortable on less thick mats.

Of course, if Pilates exercises are not going to be performed then it is quite acceptable to cover the gym floor with a basic yoga mat. These tend also to be slightly stickier than Pilates mats, and are therefore well suited to other forms of exercise such as martial arts, tai chi in particular. However, they are also thinner than Pilates mats and might not provide enough cushioning for some of the more violent throws in an art such as judo.

Many of the mats designed to cover the gym floor can also be used in the context of home fitness, and provide an affordable, often low impact approach to keeping, or getting in shape.
