Total body
conditioning with an elliptical crosstrainer
The basic idea behind a crosstrainer is that it takes all the
principles of treadmills, cycle machines, steppers and skiers to
provide a machine which exercises all the same muscle groups but
in a much more low impact fashion. We are all familiar with the
pain that can accompany pounding along a virtual road provided
by a treadmill, the relentless stair climbing movement that
represents a stepper session, and the novelty of the action of a
skier quickly wears off – and the elliptical crosstrainer is
designed to relieve all of these annoying attributes of fitness
equipment.
There are two very important points to consider when shopping
for a crosstrainer, and they both involve the variety of
exercises that you can carry out on these amazing machines. The
first point is that there should be variety within the same
movement, and this means variable incline as well as variable
speed and tension.
Since the system is built around a cycling-style movement which
is a cross between stepping and cycling, a kind of oblong
motion, the same principles for adjusting the experience on a
crosstrainer apply as for those other machines. It is, as all
fitness enthusiasts know, the variety of movement which will
keep you interested, and this is vital to keeping going, day
after day.
The second important point is whether there are any subsidiary
exercises that can be performed, such as upper body exercises at
the same time. Many variations on the crosstriner theme include
some form of upper body workout possibility, and this is vital
to maintaining interest whilst getting an efficient and balanced
workout experience.
