Weight
lifting gloves versus grips
The purpose of weight lifting gloves are to help prevent your
hands from slipping on the bar, which is still a very real
danger to those just starting out in the sport and who do not
realize that chalk alone will not suffice, no matter what they
have seen on television. Until you build up that edge of
experience, weight lifting gloves of some kind are a real must.
Weight lifting gloves have traditionally been made of leather,
but these days, with all the man made fibers that have been
developed over the years, it was only a matter of time before
someone came up with a replacement. This replacement has come in
the form of neoprene grips.
These were invented to get around some of the intrinsic problems
faced when using traditional weight lifting gloves, such as the
lack of padding. Experienced weight lifters have reported
improvements in their top lifting weights of around 20%, just by
switching to grips from regular gloves.
Leather weight lifting gloves have no extra padding, nor do they
provide any kind of support for the wrist. Some manufacturers
have adapted the old glove style to try and rectify this, but
this only goes part of the way to solving the problem. The
padding is what gives grips an edge over traditional gloves.
Whichever you select, grips or weight lifting gloves, you always
need to bear in mind that the material they are made out of will
have a bearing on your lifting experience. Leather simply fails
to measure up against newer materials, which can be washed, keep
your hands cool, fit well and above all protect your hands.
