Taking care of
cardio fitness
The word cardio, as we all know, refers to the heart. As such,
it is a word which is often associated with the fear of the
possibility that the organ is not functioning correctly, or has
something wrong with it. This is only natural, since it is the
motor which keeps your body running, and like any motor, it
needs fuel and maintenance if it is to continue to run correctly
– and care of the heart is known as cardio fitness.
Obviously, anything you can do to help improve your cardio
fitness level is good, and anything which causes it to become
compromised is bad. However, there are a few misconceptions
surrounding ways of maintaining cardiovascular health in
general, which often leads to people either not getting enough
out of their exercise regime, or have the feeling that they are
wasting valuable time at the gym trying to keep their heart in
good working order.
If this sounds familiar, then the first thing you should do is
borrow a good cardio book from your local heath center or
library. The thing to remember is that almost all exercise, from
treadmill work right through to weight lifting will improve
general levels of heart muscle fitness – so wasting time at the
gym doesn’t really come into it, if you’re doing exercise, the
chances are good that you are helping your heart.
On the other hand, you probably don’t exercise (weights, rowing,
or whatever your main regime is) every single day, because
muscles take time to recover and small things like lifting
dumbbells do not generally constitute a cardio workout. On these
days, you should usually try to fit in around 20 minutes of
treadmill or similar exercise.
